Terra & Tech Stories #5: Hypermeteo and the analysis of weather conditions

Launched in 2025 and still ongoing in 2026, the field trials of Terra & Tech – the national open innovation program for the viticulture sector launched by the association Filiera Futura in collaboration with I3P, the Incubator of Politecnico di Torino – are continuing in several regions of Italy. The initiative has fostered collaboration between the world of innovative start-ups and Italian wine producers, with the goal of promoting technology transfer in the wine sector through the implementation of advanced tools for vineyards, wineries, and wine marketing.
As a candidate selected through Terra & Tech’s call for start-ups, the young company Hypermeteo, founded in 2021 by the innovative SME Radarmeteo, had the opportunity to test its technological solution in Sicily, in the vineyards of the producer Tenuta delle Terre Nere, providing the farm with meteorological and climatic data for monitoring and interpreting weather conditions as they relate to vineyard management.
The meeting between the parties was facilitated and supported by Fondazione con il Sud, one of Filiera Futura’s partners that has supported the Terra & Tech program since its inception, promoting it throughout the region.
Testing the process
As part of the pilot program, Hypermeteo provides historical, real-time observational, and forecast meteorological data, which are displayed within MeteoCast®, Radarmeteo’s webGIS platform. The platform integrates observational sources, including weather radars, official ground-based monitoring networks, satellite data, high-resolution forecast models, and accumulated precipitation data combined with radar-rain gauge measurements.

Through MeteoCast®, Tenuta delle Terre Nere has access to radar maps and precipitation animations, nowcasting up to 3 hours, forecasts up to approximately 10 days via meteograms, maps, and tables, historical data from certified weather stations, and data viewing and extraction features.
The quality and representativeness of the data provided by Hypermeteo are among the key elements of the pilot project. By integrating, processing, and harmonizing various observational and forecasting sources, Hypermeteo provides a more comprehensive, continuous, and consistent picture of weather and climate conditions in specific areas of interest.
This approach allows to overcome the limitations associated with the availability of individual measurement points, providing information that is more representative of the local context and more useful for interpreting what is happening in the vineyards. The data, which is then displayed via Radarmeteo’s MeteoCast®, thus becomes a practical tool to support monitoring and operational decision-making in vineyard management.
The results of the collaboration
The innovative aspects of the project involve the ability to integrate a scalable digital tool – accessible even from mobile devices – into agronomic activities, enabling timely and more informed operational assessments.
The expected benefits of the experiment include a better understanding of local weather variability, an improved ability to plan vineyard activities, support for managing risks associated with heavy rainfall and significant weather events, and a more robust database for subsequent agronomic and climatic analyses.
